Decanting made easy!

Agitation is not something that keeps you in a state of restlessness when it comes to decanting, it is an elaborate word for stirring up the wine a bit!


The narrow neck of the wine bottle may not permit sufficient aeration. Decanting is simply transferring (decanting) the contents of a wine bottle into another receptacle, or decorative container before serving.  Or you can also just pour it into your glass, swirl it around, and let it sit for a while.

Slowly and carefully pouring of the wine into a decanter allows wine, and in particular older wine to separate from its sediment that can develop while the wine is aging. If the sediment is left mixed in with the wine, it will impart a very noticeable bitter, harsh flavor along with tiny bits of gunk.  This is important because you do not want the wine that you are serving to your friends to be like drinking captain crunch wine!


Second, when you pour wine into a decanter, the resulting agitation causes the wine to mix with oxygen, enabling it to develop and come to life at an accelerated pace this is particularly important for younger wine.  The more air exposure the faster the process works! Who would of thought that something that easy, pouring your wine from one vessel to another, could make a taste difference but it does! So the main purpose of decanting is to allow the wine to “breathe” by interacting with oxygen. This aeration allows the wine’s flavor to develop and lets the fragrance

Removing Sediment

If you want to decant to remove sediment in the bottom of the bottle, you can let the wine sit in one place for at least a couple of hours so the sediment settles. Remove the cork without disturbing it and shine a flashlight into the glass as you slowly pour the wine in a steady stream into the decanter. This will allow you to pour out carefully, but not be pouring the darker sediment into your wine. It works for any type of wine, but it’s still most suitable for those richer, older, darker wines.


Your wine should taste a little smoother or lighter after it’s decanted. This is because decanting allows the volatile substances in wine to evaporate into the air — especially if the wine is already at room temperature. Best to let your bottle sit for a few days open if you can manage to wait that long. Thirty minutes before your guests arrive will also make a difference! Or you can always purchase a Wine Aerator or Decanting Set!
